Acute Injury vs. Chronic Pain
The most common sources of pain are the result of an acute trauma or injury to the body. Nerves originating at the injured site send signals to the brain which notify it that an insult has occurred. These signals are interpreted by the brain as pain and serve as a protective mechanism against further injury to that area. In most cases, with proper treatment, acute pain is relieved within a short period of time. However, if pain persists beyond 6 months, this is called chronic pain.

Chronic Pain
Chronic pain can present itself in many different forms varying from mildly inconvenient to completely incapacitating. Usually the pain is a result of a prior sustained injury; however, in some cases there may be an undetermined source of pain that has been left untreated.
The physical and emotional toll of chronic pain can be great. Often patients experience:
- Constant or intermittent pain described as aching, shooting, burning, etc.
