  • About Pain and Psychology

It has been estimated up to 60% of all chronic pain sufferers display clinical symptoms of anxiety or depression. Most often these psychological responses are secondary to the person being unable to resolve their pain and/or their inability to work or participate in activities that they previously enjoyed. It is common for pain and injury patients to experience:

    • Sadness
    • Anger
    • Hopelessness
    • Difficulty sleeping
    • Anxiety
    • Decreased ability to cope

If the psychological component of injury chronic pain is left untreated, what started off as a physical injury could lead to a serious emotional issue as well. Therefore, it is important for the patient as well as the healthcare provider to recognize when psychological treatment is indicated.
