What is Whiplash?

During an automobile accident, the movement of a car is suddenly altered by the force of impact. When this occurs the safety mechanism in the seat belt locks around the passenger, securing the body to seat. The neck and head, however, are not secured and therefore "whip" in a backward and forward motion during a collision. This "whipping" causes over extension of the soft tissue and vertebrae which can cause serious damage. It is estimated that the head moves at a rate of 2.5 times that of the speed of the collision, meaning that even if the force of the impact was minor, significant whiplash injury may occur.

Symptoms of Whiplash

The most common symptom of whiplash injury pain is neck stiffness and tenderness. This is caused by the overextension and straining of the ligaments and muscles located in the cervical spine, head and neck. This pain tends to subside within several months. However, in many cases the damage extends into the joints and discs which may lead to chronic pain and debilitation.

Common symptoms of whiplash injury:

  • Neck pain or stiffness
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Mood Changes
  • Vertigo
  • Sleep disturbances
